Analysis: Louisiana homeowners pay the 34th highest property tax rate in the U.S.

With an effective tax rate of 0.79 percent, Louisiana has the 34th highest tax rate among U.S. states and the District of Columbia, according to an ATTOM Data Solutions analysis of property taxes levied on single-family homes.


With an effective tax rate of 0.79 percent, Louisiana has the 34th highest tax rate among U.S. states and the District of Columbia, according to an ATTOM Data Solutions analysis of property taxes levied on single-family homes.

The data shows Louisiana has 1.3 million single-family homes with an average estimated value of more than $182,000. The average tax amount is nearly $1,500. The effective tax rate is the percentage of a home's value the owner pays in property taxes.

New Jersey, Illinois, Vermont, Texas, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania have the highest effective tax rates – all above 2 percent. Twenty-four states have effective tax rates below 1 percent.

New Jersey homeowners pay an effective tax rate of 2.28 percent, ranking it the highest in the U.S. Louisiana homeowners pay 65 percent less than they would in New Jersey.
