What is so different between the Government and the mafia?

What is so different between the Government and the mafia? Both use scare mongering to extort as much money from their victims as possible. Both try to justify their actions by claiming the money they take from innocents is for our protection. Both claim to have the support of the people. Both will do violence and/or imprison us if we do not pay them. Both want as much power over us as possible. Non-Governmental business and individuals on the other hand allow us to trade with them voluntarily. They actually produce things of value they sell to us. Whereas, Governments (like the Mafia) only steal, pocket for themselves and redistribute the wealth earned by others.

8. the difference is the Mafia didn't have any cumbersome inefficient program to support. That is why I believe Insurance prices are as high as they are. The government knows how much tax they can collect, where as the Mafia's protection program couldn't be legitimately taxed.

11. Nothing. Instead of being proud Sicilians, they're religious fanatics. For shady deals, this administration makes the mafia look like saints. In fact, now that I think about it, I would have more trust in the mafia. At least if they're gonna kill you, you're dead - not starved to death or left homeless.
12. We are in a state of chaos throughout the world right now, but it is only temporary. Soon we will all see a new life of peace and harmony because it has been degreed by God. Unfortunately the planet has been ruled for thousands of years by dark forces who come in may guises, either as goverments, men in dark suits, mafia, FBI, presidents and many other elected leaders! The whole basis of this was greed and money and in order to do so it was by control by fear and war! Without going into detail this planet was created as a kind of penatenciary for erring souls eons ago. However God has forgiven us and now it is time to learn to forgive and learn to love firstly yourself and then all others!

17. The Mafia knows what it can do and it does it. The Government "thinks it knows" what to do and it hesitates until it is too late to do it. The Mafia is efficient; the government is inefficient. The Mafia doesn't play silly games with interlopers and other interferences; it quickly terminates them. The government, on the other hand, forgives, forgets,apologizes and hand-wrings: the problem lasts indefinitely. There is a lot to be said for the Mafia. Unfortunately it doesn't fit into the slot that governments specify for legal entities.

19. There are differences in governments. Some are almost exactly like the mafia, others are not. Some governments are a little easier to join than the mafia (civil service, elected positions) and have a little more public input on promotions and policies (popular elections). Some governments have written rules to follow instead of just informal ones. Oh, and some governments have spiffy uniforms and shiny medals to give to their hitmen. I'm not sure what the mafia gives their killers.
